Laurel Park /Hendersonville

This ZIP code covers the area of Hendersonville west of Greenville Highway and mostly south of Brevard Road (US 64) and includes the Town of Laurel Park.

History

It appears as though Laurel Park may have gotten its name from Laurel Park Estates, a corporation responsible for building Laurel Park Highway in 1924.  Prior to then, the area was owned by the Davis family.  Henderson Heritage

In 1925, J. Perry Stolz, builder of the Miami Fleetwood Hotel in Florida, bought land at the top of Jump-Off Mountain with plans to build a 15 story hotel similar to the one in Miami.  The Laurel Park Highway, the first lit highway in the US, had been built to the hotel site and could be used for transporting construction materials day and night.  The hotel was never completed due to financial problems befalling the investors and the steel in the building was eventually used to build bridges in Georgia in World War II.  Henderson Heritage, Town of Laurel Park,  Edney, Kermit (1979). Kermit Edney Remembers. Alexander, NC: WorldComm p 149.  Locals tell stories of homes in Laurel Park containing bathroom faucets that came from the Fleetwood Hotel.

"In 1926, the manager of heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was offered $35,000 plus other benefits amounting to about $25,000 to bring Jack for a month's training at the Laurel Lake Casino. It was hoped that Jack would provide publicity for the Fleetwood Hotel, then under construction. The offer was accepted and Jack and his entourage (which included his wife, movie star Estelle Taylor) arrived in April 1926 to stay at the Kentucky Home Hotel in downtown Hendersonville. Jack trained at the Laurel Park Casino during wet weather, at Indian Cave during windy weather, and at the Fleetwood Hotel site at other times. At the end of the month, the Dempseys held an informal farewell dance at Hebron Lodge in Indian Cave."  Town of Laurel Park

(The Indian Cave Lodge is currently for sale.  If you're interested in owning a piece of history, let me know and I will arrange a showing.)

Laurel Park "is famous for Jump-off Rock at the top of the mountain. There is an old legend told by Appalachian Mountain storytellers that a young Cherokee Indian maiden received word that her young Indian chief had been killed in battle, so she climbed to the edge of the rock and jumped off. The old legend says on moonlit nights one can see the ghost of the maiden on Jump-off Rock." Henderson Heritage
